1. 前顱窩anterior cranial fossa：大腦額葉frontal lobe位於此處，由額骨、篩骨、蝶骨小翼lesser wing共同組成。

2. 中顱窩middle cranial fossa：大腦顳葉temporal lobe 及腦下垂體pituitary gland位於此處，由蝶骨大翼greater wing、顳骨與頂骨共同組成。

3. 後顱窩posterior cranial fossa：小腦cerebellum及腦幹brainstem位於此處，由顳骨與枕骨所組成。

4. 前顱窩跟中顳骨的界線：外側界線為蝶骨小翼後緣，又稱蝶骨嵴sphenoidal crest，中間部分則是由視交叉溝limbus of the chiasmatic sulcus的前緣所形成。

5. 中顱窩跟後的界線：外側為顳骨的岩部嵴petrous ridge (或是crest of the petrous part of the temporal bone)，中間部分則是由蝶骨的鞍背dorsum sellae所形成。
